Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 9cm
Identification: Gray with dark scale outlines; fine blue margins on most fins.
Favourite: Solitary or form loose groups.
Hide-out: Mainly shoreline reefs with dead coral, rubble or weeds to 6m.
Location: W. and N. Australia from Perth area to Gulf of Carpentaria.

Brackish Damsel

Scientific Name: Pomacentrus taeniometopon
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 10cm
Identification: Dark brown to nearly black with yellowish tail; often with neon-blue markings on upper head and rear dorsal fin.
Favourite: Solitary or form loose groups.
Hide-out: Mangrove areas and lower reaches of freshwater streams to 4m.
Location: Asian Pacific - Indonesia, Philippines and New Guinea, north to Taiwan and S.W. Japan.

Ward's Damsel

Scientific Name: Pomacentrus wardi
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 10cm
Identification: Brown with no distinctive markings. Juvenile - Yellow with blue lines on upper head, large ocellated spot on dorsal fin.
Favourite: Solitary or form loose groups.
Hide-out: Coastal and offshore reefs to 20m.
Location: Great Barrier Reef and E. Australian coast south to Sydney area.

Yoshii's Damsel

Scientific Name: Pomacentrus yoshii
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 8cm
Identification: Overall yellow, often with dusky brown area covering sides; blue markings on head, large black spot on pectoral fin base.
Favourite: Solitary or form loose groups.
Hide-out: in 2-25m.
Location: Southern Marshall Is. in Micronesia.

Fiji Damsel

Scientific Name: Pomacentrus microspilus
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 8.5cm
Identification: Charcoal gray with blackish anal fin and whitish 'eyebrow'; diamond-shaped dark marking on pectoral fin base.
Favourite: Solitary or form loose groups.
Hide-out: Lagoons and offshore reefs with silty conditions in 1-35m.
Location: Fiji.

Komodo Damsel

Scientific Name: Pomacentrus komodoensis
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 8cm
Identification: Brown with darker scale margins; blue iris with thin inner yellow ring. Juvenile - Reddish tinge on back and blue-edged black spot on dorsal fin.
Favourite: Solitary or form groups.
Hide-out: Rock or boulder-strewn shorelines to 5m.
Location: Known only from Komodo I., Indonesia.

Princess Damsel

Scientific Name: Pomacentrus vaiuli
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 10cm
Identification: Blue with yellow-orange area on upper head and back; blue lines extends from snout onto back and dorsal fin, ocellated spot rear dorsal fin, black 'ear' spot.
Favourite: Solitary or form loose aggregations.
Hide-out: Lagoons and outer reef slopes in 3-45m.
Location: West Pacific - Bali in Indonesia to Micronesia and Samoa. S.W. Japan to Australia.

Obscure Damsel

Scientific Name: Pomacentrus adelus
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 8.5cm
Identification: Gray-brown; golden iris, ocellated spot on rear of dorsal fin (sometimes absent), dark 'ear' spot. Juvenile - Gray-blue with blue lines on forehead and spot at rear of dorsal fin.
Hide-out: Inshore and outer reefs to 8m.
Location: East Indo-Asian Pacific - Andaman Sea to Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea, north to Philippines.

Gulf Damsel

Scientific Name: Pristotis obtusirostris
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 10cm
Identification: Light gray to whitish undercolor with blue spot on each scale, occasionally a yellowish to greenish wash on upper head and back.
Favourite: Form groups.
Hide-out: Flat sand or rubble bottoms around coral or rock outcroppings in 5-80m.
Location: Indo-Asian Pacific - Arabian Gulf to S.W. Japan and E. Australia, mainly continental margins.

White Damsel

Scientific Name: Dischistodus perspicillatus
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 19cm
Identification: White to pale green; highly variable markings include 2 or 3 black to dusky spots, saddles or bars on forehead, mid-back and rear back.
Favourite: Solitary or form groups, aggressive.
Hide-out: Lagoon and inshore reefs with sand, silt and seagrass bottoms to 10m.
Location: East Indo-Asian Pacific - Andaman Sea to N.W. Australia, Great Barrier Reef and Vanuatu, north to Palau and Philippines.

Colin's Damsel

Scientific Name: Pomacentrus colini
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 9cm
Identification: Gray with darker scale outlines and large white patch on upper rear body extending onto dorsal fin.
Favourite: Solitary or form loose groups.
Hide-out: Shoreline reefs and lagoons in 10-18m.
Location: S.E. Papua New Guinea from Port Moresby to Milne Bay.

Fusilier Damsel

Scientific Name: Lepidozygus tapeinosoma
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 9cm
Identification: Elongate body; greenish brown to yellowish upper body, bluish to pink below; usually a yellow spot at base of last dorsal fin rays.
Favourite: Form feeding aggregations high above bottom.
Hide-out: Often in areas of strong current in 5-25m.
Location: Indo-Pacific - E. Africa to Line Is. and E. French Polynesia. S.W. Japan to Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea.

Guardian Damsel

Scientific Name: Altrichthys curatus
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 6cm
Identification: Whitish to pale green or olive; narrow silver streak on each scale join to form narrow lines.
Favourite: Adults in pairs; guard broods of 20-100 babies; young form groups.
Hide-out: Sheltered reefs in 2-10m.
Location: Calamian Group and Cuyo Is. north of Palawan in Philippines.

Silver-Streaked Damsel

Scientific Name: Altrichthys azurelineatus
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 6cm
Identification: Whitish with narrow silver streak on each scale, joining to form narrow lines; black margin on dorsal fin and borders of tail.
Favourite: Adults in pairs; guard broods of 20-100 babies; young form groups.
Hide-out: Sheltered reefs coral in 2-8m.
Location: Calamian Group north of Palawan in Philippines.

Darwin Damsel

Maximum Size: 13cm
Identification: White with five brown bars; often yellowish upper head and back.
Hide-out: Coral or rock outcroppings on sheltered shoreline reefs with silt and sand bottoms to 8m.
Location: N.W. Cape, W. Australia to Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland.

Maximum Size: 13cm
Identification: Pale with dark bar through eye; wide brown body bar.
Favourite: Often aggressive toward divers.
Hide-out: Shoreline and lagoon reefs with silt and sand bottoms to 8m.
Location: Asian Pacific - Indonesia and Philippines.

Staghorn Damsel

Scientific Name: Amblyglyphidodon curacao
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 11.5cm
Identification: Pale greenish to whitish with three wide, dark green bars; mid-body may be yellow.
Favourite: Usually form groups.
Hide-out: Commonly shelter among branches of staghorn Acropora coral on coastal reefs, lagoons and outer slopes to 15m.
Location: West Pacific - Singapore to Vanuatu, Samoa and Marshall Is. S.W. Japan to N.W. Australia and Great Barrier Reef.

Honeyhead Damsel

Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 18cm
Identification: Golden brown with wide white bar on mid-body and white tail; black blotch below front dorsal fin.
Favourite: Solitary or form loose groups.
Hide-out: Lagoon and inshore reefs with sand and silt bottoms to 12m.
Location: East Indo-Asian Pacific - Andaman Sea to Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea, north to Philippines.

Blackvent Damsel

Scientific Name: Dischistodus melanotus
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 15cm
Identification: White with broad brown area on upper head and forebody; dark brown patch on belly; large pale spots on gill cover.
Favourite: Solitary.
Hide-out: Lagoon and inshore coral reefs to 10m.
Location: Asian Pacific - Indonesia to Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea, north to S.W. Japan.

Obicular Damsel

Scientific Name: Amblyglyphidodon orbicularis
Family: Damselfishes - Pomacentridae
Maximum Size: 13cm
Identification: Pale gray-white with bright yellow ventral and anal fins. Formerly considered a variation of White-belly Damsel.
Favourite: Generally solitary, occasionally in pairs.
Hide-out: Near shore and outer reefs in 4-40m.
Location: West Pacific - New Caledonia, Fiji and Samoa.
